Shining a Light on Connecting: IHUG Friendship Lamps in Northwest Palmdale
In Northwest Palmdale, California, a unique program is bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds with a simple, yet powerful tool: friendship lamps.
The program, called IHUG (which stands for “Interactive Hope and Unity Gathering”), was created by local resident and business owner, Danielle de la Cruz. Her goal was to create a way for people to connect and form meaningful relationships, regardless of age, race, gender, or background.
The IHUG program focuses on a simple concept: when one person lights up their lamp, the other person’s lamp will light up as well. The program works through a series of connected wireless lights, which are installed in each participating home. When someone turns on their lamp, the other person’s lamp will turn on as well, symbolizing a connection between the two people.
In addition to the lamps, IHUG also provides a number of activities and events to help foster relationships between the participants. These include weekly lunches, dinners, game nights, movie nights and even visits to local attractions. The goal is to provide a safe and welcoming environment where people can come together, get to know each other, and form meaningful relationships.
Since its launch in 2018, IHUG has grown exponentially, with over 250 homes participating in the program. The impact of the program has been profound, with participants reporting increased feelings of connection, belonging, and support. Some have even reported forming meaningful friendships with people they would have otherwise never interacted with.
The success of IHUG has also been recognized by the local community. The Palmdale City Council recently honored IHUG with an award for its “outstanding contributions to the community.”
